3Nice charger, but a bit finickyApr 09, 2010
By Wally
I bought this battery charger because I wanted one that can handle size D batteries, also one that can charge 8 AA batteries at a time. Also, this charger has a LCD readout which shows the charge progress of each battery which is a nice touch. A unique feature of this charger is that the batteries don't start charging until the lid is closed. That is how the contacts are made on the positive/negative areas of the batteries. This feature is both good and bad. It is good as a safety measure (I assume, since it's called a family charger, the audience includes children). Yet, because the contacts aren't spring loaded, with AA and AAA batteries, sometimes after closing the lid, the contacts don't seem to touch properly (more on this later) and I found that I had to shuffle the batteries around and get them to work by trial and error.

When charging AA or AAA batteries, one can choose to charge up to 8 batteries at at time. This is possible because the contact point which touches the base of the battery has three possible contact areas in each of four chambers. The middle for charging only one battery, or the two edges for charging two in a chamber. Unfortunately, when using the outer contacts, the contacts don't always touch properly and because of that, the shuffling of batteries is required. (The shuffling isn't required when using the middle contact point). In otherwords, one can flawlessly charge 4 batteries using only the middle contact points. However, attempting to charge more than one battery in a chamber may require shuffling the batteries to get the charger to work right.

What I like:
- charges sizes besides AAA and AA
- charges up to 8 AAA and AA batteries at a time
- LCD display showing individual battery status

What I dislike:
- AA and AAA batteries needed some reshuffling to get it to charge

- hibernate feature doesn't seem to work. After the charge is done, if left idle the charger hibernates. However
I've had the batteries hibernate in the charger for several weeks, but when testing them, some already seem
discharging.

Overall, a nice charger, if you understand the limitations. The battery charger recharges batteries well, but charging more than four AA/AAA batteries at a time requires some fiddling around.

5Excellent investment!Dec 03, 2008

This product has been a great investment for our family. We haven't experienced any issues with the charger nor with any energizer rechargeable batteries going bad.

I charge 8 AA's and one 9volt and use them every week for live onstage music. They power wireless units and my camera. As i write this i've been using the same set and charger for about eight months without a hitch. My wife just commented today about buying C's and D's.....i highly recommend energizer rechargeable batteries and this specific family charger.

3not really sure if it fully works!Nov 16, 2010
By Ally B, mom of 3!
This system definitely does charge, the question is, does it FULLY charge. When our son's favorite toy died we put 3 AA batteries in it that were rechargeable. The batteries eventually needed a charge, so we popped them out of the toy and placed them in this charger and charged them all night. The next day we put them back into his toy (which is the singing seahorse ... kind of like the glowworm...) and when we turned it on the songs sounded funky, almost like the batteries were dying again! I'm pretty sure that this is not a battery thing because I put the batteries in a different charger and they seemed to charge just fine! I'm not saying it doesn't work at all, I'm just wondering if it stops charging before the battery is fully charged...?

3Does the job and does several at once.Oct 17, 2011

The Energizer Family Battery Charger is a decent product in my opinion. A while back I needed to come up with a solution for gaming controllers going out, wireless mouse dying and so on. In result I went out to purchase this charge base. It's rather sleek and stylish and right out of the box it seems to have a solid build and is made of a decent quality. Mine came with several extra AA batteries so I was especially enthralled.

I've had this base for at least two years and it still hold up until today. I see a lot of people complaining about particular bays dying off, but mine can still charge eight AA batteries as if it were nothing. The main problem I have had is the batteries themselves or sometimes the sensor not picking up.

It's a small and nagging issue which brings this review down a star or two. When you close the lid it causes the contacts to meet the battery and begin charging. This is a good feature since it helps with wasted charging but at the same time it is flawed. I've on occasion had to open and close the lid of the charger multiple times before it finally got with the program and actually displayed the battery as present in the chamber and began charging.

Another con would be that if it isn't AA you can only charge one in each bay. This is kind of a silly issue but it's one all the same. On one hand I can get eight AA batteries charging but when it comes to a smaller battery like AAA I can only dock one in each bay due to the way the clamps meet. Even if the battery is bigger only one can fit in each bay. Where as I don't mind for any other batter, the fact that you can only go four AAA at a time is rather annoying.

Other than that, it charges batteries rather quickly and the display on the top is perfect for letting you know when you can finally get the TV remote working again. Lit up blue in the dark I can even tell when my batteries are ready whilst I make the midnight run to the bathroom. Very useful little feature that sets it above some other charger bases.

So all in all I guess one could say this is a great buy in terms of if you definitely need a charging base and will be purchasing via retail store. Though it is flawed to say the least, and I'm sure everybody around Amazon will recommend the La Crosse highly over it. I bought it back before I started to really shop around on Amazon and for around thirty bucks it's a rather decent deal.

4does the job wellOct 12, 2011

I bought it to charge my misc. AA batteries. It does just that. The product DOES feel "cheap" in the sense that the plastic is thin, the joints seem like they'll give up BUT if you're nice to it it'll be nice to you. Basically, I set it up in the corner of my office desk, swap batteries as I need them and it works just fine. I would recommend it BUT not to my nephew.
