Works, image quality not great, consider other brandsJul 28, 2008
By J. Wu I've had this unit for just about a week now and I'm already preparing to send it back. Whenever I hook a camera up to this unit and connect the video output to a monitor, the image quality is pixelated quite heavily to the point where it's impossible to distinguish faces from 10 feet away in broad daylight (using Q-See's own line of cameras such as the vandal-proof dome cam and the outdoor camera with the heater installed). Hooking the cameras up directly to a TV (bypassing this DVR unit) gives gives much better and clearer results.
Given the price, I would have loved to keep this unit but you get what you pay for. I would not recommend this unit for serious surveillance. Q-See's internet monitoring functions work fairly well however it is a bit unstable - sometimes it takes a few login attempts to actually log into the device remotely. For any security DVR, this is not acceptable.
I did a side-by-side comparison with one of Costco's lower end security DVR units (Astak brand) and so far, the Astak produces far better images with Q-See's cameras. Astak's remote management is simple but it works well and doesn't require me to keep hammering away at the login screen to get in like this Q-See unit.
Note that this Q-See DVR did NOT come with any hard drive or the required hard drive mounting kit, although you can find both at any Fry's Electronics or other electronics supply store (other than BestBuy, Circuit City)

Solid 4 channel DVRJun 15, 2008

This is the latest 2008 model from Q-see. I have had this unit for a month, and it is the newest edition h.264 DVR, Meaning that the compression method is most effecient compared to the old MPEG4 codec. The embedded IE viewer is excellent and feature rich, you can access the device outside your office and review old video, and even change settings of the device.
You can actually watch, record and review at the same time.
I installed a 500GB hard drive and it lasts one month at its highest quality settings, and one year at its lowest quality.
The only problem with this device is that the remote doesnt function properly without hitting the key many times, but the included USB mouse functions much better.
I am extremely happy with this unit, and I have tried units from all the top companies, such as Swann, Nuvico and Lorex. This is the best model on the market for 4 channel DVR.

Q-See is the worst company everAug 28, 2010
By Tammy Massaro I purchased Q-see system in may of 2009.
Initially, it arrived without all the parts.
Missing were the power wiring and remote.
Trying to get these items from Q-see was a nightmare.
They don't answer the phone..nor respond to e-mails.
Months passed and finally I received the parts.
After the set up, I could not get the Item to work.
The cameras wouldn't turn on. Back to Q-see. More waisted phone calls and e-mails.
Finally I get replacement parts(another power pack wich they recommended).
Well the unit still doesn't work and now a year has passed...so they tell me
I have to pay to get the unit serviced by them(the hard drive)because the warranty is only one year.
Yes they just kept me on a lease until I had no recourse of return or refund.
The worst company ever. Don't get screwed like me...stay away.

Professionals NightmareJan 15, 2011
By Dieter Q-see has to be one of the cheapest systems available but you get what you pay for. I am a security pro and have worked on these systems up to government and multi-national corporations. This model was but into a customer of mine that bought the equipment before I met them. I reluctantly put in in for them any way. Sure enough on the 14th month of them owning it the whole thing shuts down. No power no lights nothing. It was in a wide open, cool area so over heating should not have been an issue. I took it my shop opened it up to see if there is a power supply I could replace, NOPE. The damn unit is one piece, mother board, GPU, power, video input/ outputs. Only the HD is separate. SO that means no simple service. Now I try to get a hold of Q-see, HAHA the phone number is a insurance company now. No response from letter or emails either. What a joke. My advice is go with something a little more expensive that isn't a all in one package these are normally cheap POS. there are affordable well built DVRs out there. Talk to a good tech and they should be able to stir you in the right direction.
Q-See system is terrible!Jan 10, 2012
By PowerTankSteve I have had the Q-See H264 4 camera system for about 6 months and unlike others I have used find this one to be very counter-intuitive offering very poor useability functions, and poor camera clarity. Now the DVR has stopped recording. I have submitted my request for help on their online support and have not been given any reply to my questions in two days. Phone support is non-existent and I feel I am on my own to figure this out. Starting yesterday the DVR is making intermitent noise like there is a little person inside using a pnuematic die grinder. The tiny video screen is too small to be useful and I ended up adding a TV monitor to it. At this point it is nothing more than a real-time survailance camera for me as it no longer records.
