decided to order this item after realising our water heater was close to 10 years old. Figured it would be easier and cheaper to install this thing than ro replace the basement carpet if the heater failed.
Fitted this in under an hour, some plumbing skills required.
works on demand (you can open/close the valve from the controller) and the sensor works with a single drop of water - though be careful where you put it, step on it and you'll break it.

Valve failed to close after 1 year.Jan 17, 2010

I installed this system a little over 1 year ago. I did a test this weekend and the valve did not close. The motor runs, but the ball valve stays fully open. If there had been a real water leak this system would not have made any difference at all! Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be many alternatives.

Have had three of them for two years - ExcellentMar 29, 2009

We purchased three FloodStop units two years ago for our main house and guest house. They are all in locations that would suffer significantly with a flood. We do have leak pans, but they won't help a water loss if you are away from home. The Flood Stop units work perfectly and have been tested to assure good operation. The KTec wall transformers supplied with our units are UL listed. Like many consumer products today the wall transformer is "UL", but the widget it powers is exempted. I strongly recommend these units.

Water Heater Auto Shut OffOct 25, 2010
By James I bought this after flooding my basement twice with the same washing machine. This installed quickly and easily. I tested it by pouring a small amount of water on the sensor while it was on a plate. It worked instantly and perfectly. I think this should be code. Great product and worth the money.
It works well but it doesn't stick with velcro adhesive pads.Nov 19, 2011
By James J. Walsh The motorized flood stop valve appears to work well. It cuts off the flow of water completely, but you might want to clean the sensor strips with some alcohol before putting it into operation since there may be a light film of packing oil or something similar on it which prevents it from activating at times. My only complaint is with the Velcro (hook and loop) adhesive system for mounting the control unit. The adhesive backing is not very good and it sometimes falls off of smooth surfaces. This causes an intense banging sound and crash of the unit, batteries, etc. Otherwise, this is a good unit which appears to work as it is designed to work.
